666 - Opening in Theaters Everywhere!
With the June 6, 2006 (6-6-06) opening of The Omen, Hollywood hopes to tap into the wallets of young, virulent males. They'll be taught 666 is all things Satan. Wrong. They'll be the objects of fear tactics. No reason. They'll be out $15 for popcorn and an aspartame-laced diet coke. In many cases, yes.
Turning to the Bible for deciphering 666, there are a few scriptural nuggets to plum. My observation has always been that the postmillennialist viewpoint of eschatology is the most consistent with full biblical revelation (no pun intended). It ties in with understanding 666. Plumbing it further...
The "sea beast" the apostle John wrote of in the New Testament book, Revelation, was in reference to the old Roman Empire in a general sense, and Nero Ceasar in a specific sense. Revelation 13:18 reads, “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred threescore and six.”
This sea beast was to be wicked. Revelation 13:2 reads, “And the beast (emphasis-mine) which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.”
Nero's persecution of the church lasted from November 64 to June 68, or 42 months, as called for in Revelation 13:5. It reads, “And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.”
The beast would also be a political leader. Revelation 13:7 reads, “And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.”
When Nero Ceasar's name is written in Hebrew--Neron Kesar--using a cryptogram it adds up to 666— six hundred, sixty-six—NOT "six-six-six" as is often stated in conversation (see graphic above). Jews and Romans both assigned numerals to their alphabets and no such system exists with the English language. A number that can be translated into a name and vice-versa is what is known as a cryptogram. This was popular during the first century and God specifically addresses those living during the first century with the book of Revelation. That's why he uses a cryptogram. Notice too that God had the Hebrew spelling of Nero's name equate to 666 and not the Latin, Greek or any other language's spelling.
In consideration of his wickedness, his political reign, his length of time in office, and the Hebrew spelling of his name, only Nero Ceasar meets all of the criteria for "being" 666.
Revelation is a scathing rebuke of the Jews who pierced Christ, and having 666 equate to the Hebrew spelling of Nero Ceasar ensured that most every Jew would be capable of figuring this out. This of course does not imply Gentiles aren't responsible for Christ's crucifixion as all men, being related to Adam, have a death sentence against them at birth.
God seems to have chosen 666 because six was God's number representing man (and beast). God created man on the sixth day. Seven has always been "God's number" (the seven thrones, the seven lampstands, the seven stars, etc.) representing Himself. 666 emphasizes that the beast would be a cut under (a big cut) the majesty and awesomeness of God. Six falls short of seven. Tripling six emphasized that God is superior to man.
Rest assured, Hollywood's scholarly traits will shine dimly with The Omen, as they did with The Da Vinci Code. You might say it's not a good omen if you think you came away plumb wiser for having watched The Omen.
